Mixbrow Construction is thought to be the first Suffolk-based construction company to achieve certification against all three major international standards for its business management system (BMS).

In recent years, the pre-requisite for businesses has been achieving international accreditation under ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. As there was no international accreditation for health and safety, the only option was to achieve BS OHSAS 18001.

Last year ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety was introduced and Mixbrow Construction successfully achieved this new accreditation earlier this month.

Stuart Leech, operations director at Mixbrow Construction commented: “Our BMS has been developed to evolve. It establishes a formal structure for the business whilst still providing us with the essential flexibility to improve co-ordination and communication and encourage innovation.  This optimum balance of structure and adaptability allows us to accommodate our client’s specific needs whilst maintaining consistently high standards of service.

The establishment of our BMS and certification to ISO’s 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 transformed the way we work; improving efficiency and ensuring consistency across the business.  The attainment of ISO 45001 compliance was the next stage of this process of continual improvement.

“One of the main differences between BS OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001 is the focus of the latter on mental health wellbeing.  This is something we have embraced with members of our team completing the 2-day MHFA Mental Health First Aid course earlier this year.”

Paul Rowe of PS Rowe Associates near Bury St Edmunds worked with Mixbrow Construction in obtaining the accreditation and is retained as a consultant to ensure that they remain compliant with current legislation.

Paul added: “As a business, Mixbrow Construction is as up to date as possible.  A lot of work has gone into their BMS and elements of it have been revised and improved several times to get them to this point”

Based at Lion Barn Industrial Estate in Needham Market, Mixbrow Construction has been trading since 1973. They work with clients all over East Anglia on projects ranging from social housing schemes to office buildings and healthcare facilities.
