Proposals for a new multi-storey car park at Portman Road in Ipswich are returning to the town’s borough council at the end of the month for further deliberations.
The council’s executive last met to discuss the proposals, which are a key component of the wider Portman Road Masterplan, on September 30 – and are now set to discuss them again at a second meeting on October 28.
The development would include a parking facility with 718 spaces, including 32 Blue Badge spaces and dedicated bays for electric vehicles and cycle parking.
Of the 718 spaces, 655 will be within a new multi-storey car park with an additional 63 at a nearby surface level car park.
The Portman Road Masterplan, announced by Ipswich Borough Council last year, also includes plans for a state-of-the-art aquatics centre and an opportunity for the expansion of the stadium’s Cobbold Stand.
Ipswich Borough Council’s planning and development committee unanimously backed plans for the new aquatics centre in April.
Speaking ahead of the executive’s meeting last month, Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “This multi-storey car park is a vital first step in delivering the Portman Road Masterplan.
“By approving the revised design and budget, we’re enabling progress on key developments like the new aquatics centre, while ensuring long-stay parking is maintained for residents and visitors.”
If successful, work is hoped to begin in the summer of 2026 ahead of completion in late 2027.
