Work has officially begun to build 67 new affordable homes in a village near Ipswich for a local housing association.

A team from Flagship Homes met with contractors Aspen Build at the Lime Kilns development site, off Ely Road in Claydon, for a traditional groundbreaking ceremony in late September.

The development will feature 42 homes for affordable rent, alongside 25 properties available for shared ownership. The homes listed for affordable rent will be allocated to families on the local authority waiting list.

Sarah Lingley, Lettings Officer at Flagship Homes, said: “We’ve been working closely with Mid-Suffolk Council and local residents to make sure that we understand exactly what Claydon needs.

“We’re confident that this is a really valuable addition to the local area, and I can’t wait to see this gorgeous village keep growing.”

Timber frames for the homes will be made off-site in a factory using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)  to improve energy efficiency, while each property will also feature air source heat pumps and an electric charging vehicle point.

Plans for the development were first submitted to Mid Suffolk District Council in 2018 and were approved in 2021, with part funding supplied by Homes England.

It is expected the first homes will be available next year.

Gary Rush, Construction Manager at Aspen Build, added: “Claydon has such a rich history and we’re proud to honour that as we build these homes for the future.

“This is a special development, and we can’t wait to see the Claydon community grow.”

Other Flagship developments in the pipeline include South Green in Dereham, Norfolk, Kingsfleet Park in Trimley St Martin, Suffolk, and Trinity Fields in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.

Oleg Barsoukov, Project Manager at Flagship Homes, added: “We’re delighted to be bringing these homes forward and helping them become part of the local landscape.”
