An apprentice at a long-running Ipswich chartered surveyors has enthusiastically recommended apprenticeships as a way to kickstart a successful career in construction.

Castons, which marks its 130th anniversary this year, has a long history of championing apprenticeships, with many on its team coming through their graduate apprenticeship scheme.

Among them is 21-year-old Harry Norman, who is training as a quantity surveyor.

He splits his week between Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford and the office in Ipswich, spending two days in the classroom each week.

“University and the office complement each other really well,” he said.

“The theory you learn in the classroom, you get to put into practice straight away when back at work, you get to see it in action in the real world.

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, it’s a great way to gain real world experience and develop your career while earning at the same time.

“I’m really enjoying it, it’s brilliant. Every day is different, I know it’s a cliche but it’s the truth.”

Although Harry is set to complete the graduate scheme in January 2027, he has already been appointed as a quantity surveyor at the firm.

Castons, which became part of Artelia Group in 2024, has seen apprentices rise through the ranks of the company, with some now in more senior positions.

The company has grown its team over the last five years to more than 65. In that time 11 young people have graduated through its apprenticeship scheme, with three more currently on the scheme.

Ipswich MP Jack Abbott visited the company in November to speak to apprentices, saying: “Caston’s commitment to apprenticeships demonstrates the crucial role apprentices play in meeting the country’s need for skilled workers.”

Tim Tompkins, Director at Castons, said: “The construction industry is one of the key drivers for economic growth for the UK, but like many sectors faces challenges in growing its workforce.

“Apprenticeships are a great way to attract more young people into the industry, providing a clear path for qualification and progression.

“It’s great to hear our apprentices like Harry speak so enthusiastically about our graduate scheme and that they would recommend it to other young people.

“It’s a hugely rewarding career and we need more young people to join the sector.”
