A community survey has claimed the town of Kesgrave near Ipswich could require almost 500 new affordable homes to meet a rising demand.

The survey, conducted by arc4 on behalf of Kesgrave Town Council, shines a light on the need for affordable homes in the area, using information from a household survey, housing registry data and a review of 2021 census data.

In total, it has claimed as many as 485 affordable homes need to be built over the next five years.

The report reads: “All three data sources indicate a shortfall in affordable housing in Kesgrave and an ongoing demand for a range of dwelling types and sizes.

“The overall summary is a net annual need for between 24 and 97 each year based on available evidence, which equates to a need of between 122 and 485 over 5 years.”

The details of the new report were discussed by Kesgrave Town Council’s Planning and Development Committee on Monday, November 10.

The minutes of that meeting are yet to be published before the committee meets again on Monday, November 24.

The report comes as plans have been submitted for 1,300 homes in nearby Foxhall Road by developer Bloor Homes.

According to Bloor Homes, the new development, opposite Foxhall recycling centre, will include “significant levels of affordable housing to help support local communities and first-time buyers”.

Plans are still in the early stages, with the community asked to submit their views on the project as part of a consultation period.

Alongside this potential development, Taylor Wimpey East Anglia has announced the third phase of its 2,000 home development at Brightwell Lakes, which is being constructed close to the business park at nearby Adastral Park in Martlesham.
