Up to 400 new homes have been proposed in a draft masterplan to regenerate the Rowley Drive area of Newmarket.
The draft plans, proposed by Bromford Flagship, include the construction of the new homes alongside the rebuilding of existing apartment blocks and the creation of better green spaces.
The affordable housing provider is now seeking approval from West Suffolk Council to launch a public consultation on its proposals, ahead of a potential full planning application as early as next year.
Dave Armstrong, Chief Operating Officer of Bromford Flagship, said: “We want to create a place where people feel safe and supported. We’re aiming to bring the community back into the centre of the neighbourhood and enable people to thrive.
“We want to create warm, affordable, well-designed homes in a place that feels part of the town, not cut off from it.”
Originally built in the 1950s and 1960s, the estates around Rowley Drive were designed to meet the growing demand for post-war housing.
A series of events would be planned should the council give a green light to the consultation, including public exhibitions in the Rowley Drive area.
Mr Armstrong added the firm would work with residents to develop a wider, detailed planning application, with further potential additions including the replacement of existing homes and construction of underground parking.
He said: “The current neighbourhood was designed in a different era, and it no longer works for the people who live there.
“Residents have been clear: they want something better, and they want to be involved in shaping it.
“This vision has grown out of their feedback and ideas.”
