Bidding opens for £250m Sizewell C earthworks contract

Bidding has opened for firms looking to secure a contract for up to £250m of earthworks during the construction of Sizewell C.

The two-year bulk earthworks contract covers the excavation, transportation and discharge of more than 3,200,000m³ of made ground, crag sand, alluvial deposits on site, enabling the construction of units 1 and 2 of the plant.

The materials will be transported to storage or disposal locations in the temporary construction area using a segregated heavy haul road.

The road will be managed by the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), made up of Balfour Beatty, Laing O’Rourke and Bouygues Travaux Publics.

Other requirements include testing to assess material suitability, as well as the shaping and compacting of stockpiles.

The total value of the works has been estimated between £100m and £250m.

Interested firms have until October 31 this year to submit applications, with the commencement of works earmarked for January 2027.
