An Ipswich apprentice joiner has been crowned the best in the country at a prestigious industry awards ceremony.

Luke Newton, who is plying his trade at Bildeston-based TMJ Interiors, won Apprentice of the Year at this month’s British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards in London.

It comes after Luke showed his skills during the restoration of a 100-year-old building, with his employers saying he “exemplifies the ideal apprentice”.

Luke said: “I am really pleased to have been recognised with this award.

“Being an apprentice at TMJ has given me the chance to develop my skills, work on exciting projects, and learn from an amazing team.

“I’m really grateful to everyone for their guidance and support.”

This is not the first time Luke has been recognised for his craft, having also won TMJ’s own Green Card Award in recognition of his work championing health and safety in the workplace.

An excerpt from his entry read: “From his very first interview, it was clear that Luke would be a valuable asset to TMJ. Luke exemplifies the ideal apprentice – skilled, dedicated and aligned with our values.”

Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of the BWF, added: “This year’s BWF Awards provided a fantastic opportunity for the sector to come together to recognise and celebrate the projects, businesses and people driving innovation and best practice across woodworking and joinery manufacture.

“Congratulations to Luke Newton for his exceptional achievements as an apprentice. His dedication, skill, and passion for his craft are a real inspiration, and he sets a shining example for apprentices across the sector.”

Other winners at this year’s ceremony included Tiptree-based Mumford & Wood, who took home the Woodworking Project of the Year Award for their work handcrafting bespoke windows for London’s exclusive residential 1 Mayfair project.

James Latham Ltd, headquartered in Hertfordshire, also won the Sustainability Award.
