The Regent Theatre in Ipswich has shut its doors as work on its £3.45 million makeover gets underway.
The project, led by Ipswich Borough Council, will see the Grade II-listed venue upgraded and modernised, improving the front of house facilities.
Customers with accessibility needs will have better access to the building through the new entrance, which will allow direct access to the foyer and a new lift to the theatre’s circle.
The new look theatre is designed by KLH Architects, with Mixbrow Construction awarded the contract to deliver the works.
The project is funded through a Restoration Levy, which has been added to the price of all the venue’s tickets over £10 since June 2023, with the money ring-fenced for the theatre’s upkeep.
Councillor Jane Riley, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Culture and Customers, said: “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and we’d like to thank them for their continued feedback and support for this redevelopment project.
“Our Theatres Team have carefully considered their views and have planned a comprehensive transformation across the whole building, which we hope will make a real difference to all our visitors.
“When the curtain closes in May, the show will still go on, so we’re looking forward to engaging with our visitors to ensure they are part of the legacy of the theatre for years to come.”
Stuart Edgar, Director at KLH Architects, said: “There’s a lot of pride in working on such a high-profile project on one of Ipswich’s most iconic and historic buildings.
“Everyone in the town has their own memories of seeing big names at the Regent, from music acts to stand-up comedians and theatre tours.
“What makes this project extra special however is how it’s a local consortium involved – from the contractors to the engineers and us at KLH on the design side.
“It will be great to breathe new life into the theatre ahead of its centenary celebrations in 2029, marking a historic moment for the arts sector in our town.”
