Rodić Davidson Architects reveal a vision that seamlessly integrates into its conservation area surroundings. It promises to bring not only vibrancy but, alongside public realm improvements, make the medieval walkway a much safer and accessible area.
The contemporary extension to a central mixed-use Cambridge building will pay homage to the traditional vernacular architecture found in the area, with bronze cladding that rises up from ground level and an overhang reminiscent of the neighbouring Champion of the Thames public house. Its minimalist form will be enhanced by perforations across the exterior walls, allowing light into the beautiful space while also creating subtle textural nuances.
According to the Planning Officer at Cambridge City Council, the extension “will be a positive change to this building and will enhance this area of the Historic Core Conservation Area”. Rodić Davidson are award-winning architects with strong links to Cambridge and the surrounding area. Ben Davidson, Director of Rodic Davidson Architects, said, “Although our Practice is based in Bloomsbury, I love living and working in Cambridge. On Saturday’s, I enjoy playing tennis with my children on the public courts in Christ’s Pieces and when the corner property – presently so unloved – came up for sale, we felt the urge to try and make a positive contribution to this important and historic passageway through the city”
