Pupils from St Michaels VA Junior School in Bowthorpe enjoyed an inspiring day of activities when construction company R G Carter, who are working on the nearby Three Score Housing Development, visited the school to plant trees, deliver surplus building materials for creative play and discuss sustainability.
Since the start of the third build phase of the Three Score Development in Bowthorpe, R G Carter has been engaging and collaborating with St Michael’s VA Junior School and Cloverhill Infant and Nursery School (both part of the All Angels’ Federation) helping to leave a positive legacy in the communities in which it operates.
On the day, with help from R G Carter and Norwich Regeneration Ltd, the children planted six trees to help offset trees that were removed from the Three Score development prior to its construction;, took part in a Q&A session on construction and sustainability and unloaded a range of surplus building materials from the R G Carter van which they will use in imaginative play in their playground, making creations such as cars, trucks, trains and dens. This short film outlines the day’s aim and activities
Ollie Bennison, Deputy Head Teacher, said:
“The St. Michael’s Junior School, Clover Hill Infant and Nursery School and R G Carter partnership is about building a brighter future for our children and the local communities that we are in. We are thrilled to partner with R G Carter in developing our forest schools and to have the children learn about the opportunities in the construction world while gaining an appreciation for the environment.
“Our Eco council at school has come up with some wonderful ideas to continue this collaboration, that truly embodies the spirit of courage and advocacy, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
The school visit by R G Carter follows a number of successful activities enjoyed by the pupils including a site visit to the Three Score development and building bug hotels, the creation of handprints in concrete slabs for the school playground and the decoration of hard hats to highlight the importance of safety on construction sites.
