A Suffolk non-profit aiming to encourage more women into the construction industry has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
Women in Construction Anglia (WiCA) has been named a finalist in the Women’s Network of the Year category at the Inspiring Women in Construction & Engineering Awards.
The social enterprise, founded in 2024, helps raise awareness of construction opportunities for women – including both those at school or those looking for a career change.
It also acts as a network for those already in the industry to help boost retention.

Shell Smith, a founding board member of WiCA, said: “I am absolutely delighted to see WiCA shortlisted for a national award.
“In our first two years we have reached hundreds of people across the East of England – both school leavers and those looking to change careers – showcasing the amazing opportunities available on our mission to make the construction industry more inclusive.
“We’ve also provided a platform for people to network, connect and inspire; championing diversity and raising awareness of the issues we face to boost retention, which is an incredibly important area for us.
“This is only the beginning for us – so to have received national recognition so early on is truly inspiring.”
This is not the first time WiCA has been in the national spotlight, having previously been invited to host events at the House of Commons alongside Ipswich MP Jack Abbott.
The organisation also recently unveiled its first board, including a host of nationally renowned industry professionals including Siu Mun-Li, who was named the UK’s most influential woman in construction in 2024.
Its founder, Clare Friel, has also been shortlisted in the Allyship Champion of the Year category.

Clare said: “Throughout my life and career, I’ve had to find my voice and use it to create opportunities, challenge assumptions and earn my place at tables where I wasn’t always expected to be.
“Those experiences taught me just how important it is to be seen, heard and given the chance to succeed.
“That’s why I’m passionate about using my time, platform and voice to support others, especially those who may not have a voice, may not be seen, or may not feel heard.
“To be recognised for something that comes from a place of genuine belief and purpose is incredibly special.”
