More than 500 professionals from across the construction industry gathered to discuss exciting new growth opportunities for the sector at Essex Build Expo 26.

The event, organised by Essex Growth Agency, included meet-the-buyer sessions to link firms with major contractors and Essex County Council Procurement – alongside advice on all things AI, automation and digital workflow tools.

It also saw the launch of the Essex Supply Chain Portal, a digital hub connecting suppliers to construction, infrastructure and retrofit opportunities.

It is hoped the event will support the continued, sustainable growth of the region’s £7.8bn construction sector.

Councillor Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and Cabinet Member for Communities, Transformation and Economic Growth, said: “Construction plays a huge role in driving our county’s economy.

“It creates opportunities for businesses, supports our communities, and opens doors for the next generation of workers.

“Essex Build Expo brings together everyone involved in construction – from industry leaders to the future workforce who will shape the next decade of growth.

“It’s a great example of Essex’s ambition to build sustainably, develop new skills, and support the people who power our industry.”

More than 65,000 people work in construction across Essex, with the sector set to grow by more than a third by 2030.

It is hoped that will include an increase in the number of women working in the industry – with local non-profit Women in Construction Anglia also invited to present at the event.

That included a talk from multi-award-winning construction leader Siu Mun Li, who spoke about the opportunities the sector poses for women.

Clare Friel, Founder of Women in Construction Anglia and Editor of Construction Anglia, added: “It was great to be among hundreds of construction professionals who are genuinely excited by the trajectory of our region’s industry. There is a genuine sense of optimism going forward.

“We want to ensure women of all ages – whether they are school leavers or those looking for a change in career – know about the opportunities available to them and feel empowered to join this incredible industry.

“It is also key to ensure that women already in the industry are part of a community so we retain existing talent.

“Our thanks go to Essex Growth Agency for inviting us to such an inspiring event.”
