An Ipswich contractor is once again opening up its revered apprenticeship scheme, giving the next generation of Suffolk workers a great start to their careers.

Mechanical and electrical contractor DPL Group – which also includes sister companies Protect & Detect and Green Technology Solutions (GTS) – has made a call-out for its next batch of apprentices, with roles available from September.

The multi-award-winning firm places a great emphasis on its apprenticeship programme, having been recognised as members of the “5% Club”, meaning at least one in 20 of its staff are in “earn and learn” roles.

Numerous directors, senior staff and employees first joined DPL through its apprenticeship scheme, including Mechanical Fitter Curran Bomyer, who has been at the firm for more than a decade.

He said: “My apprenticeship was a really good opportunity for me. I enjoyed every job I worked on.

“I have dyslexia so have always struggled with exams and coursework, but the hands-on nature of the apprenticeship was the best way for me to learn.

“The support was great – everyone is willing to help you and teach you about the role. I’m now working in more of a supervisory role so find myself being the one supporting the apprentices now.

“I’d say apprenticeships are a great way to start your career and get hands-on experience. I’d 100% recommend them.”

Curtis Andrews, who also completed his apprenticeship with DPL, added: “My apprenticeship was great.

“Being able to learn on the job while earning a wage is a big benefit of apprenticeships, especially when you come out with a qualification in the end.

“Doing an apprenticeship with DPL gives you the opportunity to work with a range of people helping improve your communication and confidence.

“I’d definitely recommend it.”

DPL also enjoys successful relationships with Suffolk New College as an industry partner and the Eastern Education Group, helping shape career pathways for learners.

That includes giving apprentices a balanced approach to both college-based and on-site learning.

Lewis Brown, Director of DPL Group, also started his career as an apprentice with the firm in 2009.

He said: “I know first-hand how beneficial apprenticeships can be and the doors they can open. I wouldn’t be where I am today without mine.

“Apprenticeships play a huge role in how we operate at DPL, with our entire group sharing the belief in the importance of training the next generation.

“Our apprenticeship schemes are open for everyone. If you are enthusiastic about building a career with us, then we would love to hear from you.”

Applications to join this year’s apprenticeship programme close Sunday, May 31.
