Essex’s newest skatepark has been unveiled in Maldon as part of a near £1m investment by the local authority.
Representatives from both Maldon District Council and the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex (PFCC) officially opened the new Maldon Skatepark in the town on Wednesday, May 13.
The facility replaces the town’s former skatepark on the same site in Promenade Park and was built by Oxfordshire-based Bendcrete Skateparks Ltd.
Cllr Kevin Lagan, Chairman of Maldon District Council, said: “This skatepark is a fantastic addition to our district and something I am incredibly proud to see delivered for our community.
“Spaces like this give young people a positive place to be active, develop new skills and make lasting friendships, while adding real energy to our parks.
“As someone who is passionate about Maldon and the people who live here, it has been especially important to see residents involved in shaping these facilities.
“This skatepark is a real investment in our community’s future, and I hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
The new skatepark comes as part of a £911,660 investment to build three skateparks in the district.
That figure includes a £60,000 contribution from the PFCC Safer Street Fund, which has been used to provide a shelter and lighting at Maldon Skatepark.
The council’s contribution to the project was funded through Section 106 developer contributions.
The two other skateparks to benefit from the funding are Riverside Park skatepark in Burnham-on-Crouch and the new facility at West Maldon Community Centre.
A free community skate event is being hosted at the skatepark by King Ramps on Monday, May 25 to celebrate the park’s construction, including tuition and demonstrations from professional skateboarders.
