Plans for a state-of-the-art aquatics centre in Portman Road in Ipswich have been given the green light.

Ipswich Borough Council’s planning and development committee unanimously rubber stamped the plans at a meeting on Tuesday, April 30.

The council’s ambitious proposal, supported by Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Town Football Club, looks to rejuvenate the area, significantly enhancing the public areas around the town’s famous football ground.

The new sports facilities will eventually replace Crown Pools, with inclusive facilities aimed at promoting health, wellbeing and sporting excellence.

The facility will also champion eco-friendly credentials, aiming for an “Excellent” BREEAM sustainability rating.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “This approval is a momentous achievement, representing another leap forward in making our vision a reality.

“This project will become a community jewel, a symbol of how sports, leisure and communal wellbeing are valued in Ipswich.

“Our focus now shifts to implementing the next phases of the project and continuing to attract forward-thinking investors who share our commitment to a healthier, more vibrant Ipswich.”

Now planning consent is in place, the project will move into the technical design phase where detailed architectural and engineering designs will be drawn up.

By the end of this phase, which may take up to 12 months, a detailed design programme will emerge and a timeline for the construction phase will be agreed, along with the final funding strategy.

Councillor John Cook, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, said: “This is a huge step towards providing modern, accessible and sustainable sports facilities that will serve residents for generations to come.

“The new aquatics centre is not just a replacement for Crown Pools, it is a significant upgrade that puts health, inclusion, and community pride at its core.”
