A contractor has been appointed to build a Norfolk road which could pave the way for the delivery of 4,000 new homes.
Costain has been awarded the contract to build the new West Winch Housing Access Road near King’s Lynn after the £122m scheme received planning permission last autumn.
The road forms part of a wider project within the West Winch Strategic Growth Area and will link the A47 with the A10.
Plans for the growth area include as many as 4,000 new homes, primary schools, commercial spaces, residential and healthcare centres and other amenity areas.
Grahame Bygrave, Lead Director of Infrastructure at Norfolk County Council, said: “Congratulations to Costain for being awarded the design and build contract for the project, it’s great to have them on board.
“Our project team will work closely with them to continue to move this project forward and progress to the start of construction as soon as possible.”
Once opened, the new road will become part of the A10.
Other work awarded in the contract includes the creation of new roundabouts to provide access to the new housing areas, a cycle path and dualling a stretch of the A47.
Subject to final business case approval, the project could receive significant funding from the UK Government and Homes England.
Andy Denman, Roads Sector Director at Costain, added: “This award is built on our long-established highways delivery expertise and our proven track record in delivering best-in-class, value-for-money services for local authorities across the UK.
“The West Winch Housing Access Road is an exciting project that will significantly improve people’s lives and help support the local economy.
“We’re looking forward to bringing constructability to the heart of the design to minimise risk and maximise efficiency, working closely with our supply chain partners to deliver this new road safely and efficiently.”
Detailed designs for the new road are expected to be finalised this year ahead of construction in 2027.
