Plans for the replacement of West Suffolk Hospital have reached a ‘major milestone’ after contracts were signed with the project’s construction partner.
International construction company Dragados, which has extensive experience in healthcare projects, will work alongside the hospital trust and New Hospital Programme to produce a detailed design ahead of construction.
Dr Ewen Cameron, Chief Executive of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a major milestone in our journey towards delivering a new hospital for West Suffolk and marks the beginning of the next stage of the programme.
“We’ll continue working closely with staff, patients and local communities as we develop the detailed designs.
“There is still more to do but today is another important step towards providing modern facilities for future generations.”
The appointment allows the programme team and Dragados to continue developing the designs for the new hospital site, building on the engagement already undertaken with thousands of staff, patients and people from the local area.

The project has already hit a number of significant milestones, including the purchase of the site at Hardwick Manor in Bury St Edmunds, gaining outline planning permission, the development of hospital designs and extensive discussions with hospital staff, patients and local communities.
An outline business case for the project is due later this year and construction is expected to begin between 2027 and 2028, subject to approvals.
