A multinational construction firm has been appointed the main contractor of a £21.8million regeneration project at a historic Essex port.
Balfour Beatty will lead on the delivery of the Leigh Port Regeneration Project, modernising infrastructure at the port near Southend-on-Sea.
Work will include the construction of a new 265m-long quay wall, improved drainage and upgraded surfaces, while dredging work to maintain appropriate water depths will also be carried out.
In all, the project is aimed to deliver better facilities for fishermen and cocklers – securing the long-term future of the historic working port.
Councillor Kevin Robinson, Cabinet Member for Planning, Property and Governance at Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: “Leigh Port is a vital part of Southend’s identity, heritage and economy.
“This investment will help secure the future of the fishing and cockling industry, support local jobs and businesses, and protect a valued historic asset, demonstrating our commitment to regeneration and growth while preserving the character that makes Southend special.”
The scheme is funded through £14.9m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, alongside £6.9m from Southend-on-Sea City Council.
Plans received the green light in July, with preparatory design and engineering work already completed before Balfour Beatty’s appointment.
Construction is set to begin in October, with work expected to be complete by spring 2028.
