A popular leisure centre in Essex is set for a £25million redevelopment after modernisation plans were given the green light.
The plans for Brentwood Centre, submitted by Brentwood Borough Council, will see parts of the complex demolished, extended and refurbished to create a flagship new sport and community hub.
That includes the partial demolition of the western wing of the centre, alongside the removal of its 7-a-side football pitch and volleyball courts – donated to the centre following the London 2012 Olympics.
In their place will be three new all-weather 3G sports pitches, extended leisure facilities, additional parking and a new-look public plaza entrance.
Councillor Gareth Barrett, the council’s Chair of Asset & Strategy Committee, said: “This is a huge moment for a facility that’s been part of Brentwood life for decades.
“The new Brentwood Centre is going to help local people to live active, healthy lives for many years to come, and it’s vital to get it right.”
In all, the proposed extensions would see the building increase in size to 2,182sqm – an additional 242sqm compared to its current footprint.
Other improvements to the site will include a remodelled cafe and holistic hub.
Council officers are set to complete a final round of cost and value-for-money checks, with a full business case due to be considered by the Asset & Strategy Committee in October.
The authority is also hoping to secure up to £2m in grant funding from the Football Foundation towards the 3G pitches.
Cllr Barrett added: “This is a difficult economy in which to deliver major projects, but where it provides such huge benefits for our residents, it’s important that we forge ahead.
“We will carefully ensure strong value for money as we refine the scheme to create a modern, accessible centre that’s achievable and improves the lives of people in Brentwood.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this project progress.”
The centre is set to remain open during most of the redevelopment, with the council and centre operator Everyone Active set to work together to minimise disruption.
