A housebuilder is helping the ‘next generation of construction superstars’ build their careers after donating more than 30,000 bricks to a Suffolk college.
The donation of 36,000 bricks to Suffolk Rural was made by Barratt Homes and its sister company David Wilson Homes, which are both currently working on the Henley Gate garden suburb in the outskirts of Ipswich.
The bricks will be used as the college’s Level 1 and Level 2 bricklaying students prepare for their annual display at the Suffolk Show at the end of the month – as well as in future lessons at the Otley-based college.
Gavin Loose, Construction Lecturer at Suffolk New College, said: “We are very grateful to Barratt Homes for its incredible donation of around 36,000 bricks.
“This will enable our students to continue to hone their talents within our outstanding construction centre.
“It’s great that Barratt Homes sees the value in supporting the next generation of construction superstars and we look forward to working with the housebuilder in the future to support the development of our talented learners.”
Tom Wright, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said he hopes the donations could inspire students to consider careers with the business.
He added: “It is extremely important that we encourage and assist the next generation of housebuilders and construction workers in any way we can.
“We hope that by donating these bricks to Suffolk Rural college, the pupils will be able to showcase their abilities and the skills they have learnt over the year at the Suffolk Show, and one day we may be able to welcome some of the college alumni into our site teams.”
The second stage of the Henley Gate development was granted planning permission last summer, with the entire garden suburb potentially including up to 3,500 homes, a community centre, nine acre country park and primary school upon completion.
