Work has started on the construction of 18 new homes in Charsfield in Suffolk – including four affordable homes.

The homes are being built by family-run Bury St Edmunds contractor Hartog Hutton and will comprise a mix of three and four-bedroom homes, including five bungalows.

Orwell Housing has agreed to purchase four of the homes, which will be made available for an affordable price on completion.

The new community, Blythe Meadow, is a significant development for the small village, so care has been taken to reduce the impact of building work.

George Wells, Director at Hartog Hutton, said: “We’ve found over the years that clever use of space within the boundaries of a village is the most successful way of delivering new homes that create an immediate community.

“This site is really special. It’s tucked away down a quiet lane with open fields on three sides.

“Once we’ve completed landscaping it will blend in beautifully with its surroundings.”

Despite wet weather conditions, the foundations are now in place and the access road, off St Peters Close, has been constructed.

With its location in the village, access to the site has been a top priority to minimise mud on the site and to keep it tidy.

Hartog Hutton says the Blythe Meadow development will be an attractive proposition for families working in nearby Ipswich, as well as to retirees looking for an easy-to-manage home in a village setting.

The development is now taking shape, with work set to be completed later this year.
