A survey of a construction company’s staff has revealed coffee has overtaken tea as its builders’ favourite choice of hot drink – with chocolate Hobnobs being their first choice to dunk.

To mark National Tea Day, on April 21, Barratt and David Wilson Homes asked more than 200 of their construction staff across East Anglia for their preferred choice of hot drink – with coffee receiving 52% of the vote compared to just 37% for tea.

Asked for their preferred method of making the perfect brew, 86% of staff confirmed adding hot water first is a must when making the perfect cuppa, compared to the controversial milk first option.

On the burning question of which biscuit is the best to dunk, the chocolate Hobnob came out as a winner, earning 26% of the votes, closely followed by the chocolate digestive at 22%.

Runners up included shortbread, custard creams and ginger biscuits.

Asked how many cups they drank a day, 30% of responders confirmed three was the perfect number for an average day, while one in six said they drink five or more cups a day.

Will Phair, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said a strong brew is a general go-to when important decisions need to be made.

He added: “As for the biscuits, whether it’s a Hobnob or a digestive, chocolate is always the winner.

“We are always happy to put the kettle on for our customers and we invite anyone interested in buying a new home with us to visit our developments for a chat with our sales advisers over a cuppa.”

A total of 100 million cups of tea are consumed by people in Britain every day according to the Tea and Infusions Organisation, ranking behind Ireland and Turkey as the world’s biggest consumers.
