The multi-million-pound redevelopment of Ipswich Museum has entered a new stage following the completion of all major internal and external construction works.
The museum announced the redevelopment was reaching its final stages in May following the completion of all structural improvements, roofworks and a new staircase and lift.
Two new specialist contractors – Huf Build and Mather & Co – have now been appointed to install the new displays and galleries.
Harry Coughlin, Managing Director – Museums at HUB Build, said: “We’re really excited to be part of this next stage of the Ipswich Museum redevelopment, working in such a beautiful, historic building.
“While the galleries are starting to take shape on site, there is also a huge amount happening behind the scenes within our workshops and across our specialist supply chain.
“Working closely with Mather & Co, our teams are now turning the exhibition designs into reality, manufacturing the bespoke setworks, numerous showcases that will house and protect the museum’s magnificent collections, as well as the interactive elements and graphics that will help bring the stories and objects to life for visitors.”
Electricians are also working across the museum to install new cabling and infrastructure, with first fix electrical works now complete in several areas.
Protective coverings remain in place across the museum’s floors to help preserve the building’s character and heritage.
Mr Coughlin added: “Projects like this are particularly rewarding because so many different specialist elements have to come together to create the finished visitor experience.
“Seeing Mather & Co’s designs progress from detailed design and manufacture through to installation within such an important historic building is incredibly exciting for everyone involved.
“We’re really looking forward to the coming months as more of these elements arrive on site and the new galleries begin to come to life.”
Work to redevelop the museum first began in 2024, delivered by Gipping Construction, with the building having initially closed ahead of the project in 2022.
The latest available figures show the project could cost as much as £12.3million, after Ipswich Borough Council’s executive committee gave the green light to a £492,625 funding boost in March.
It is expected to reopen in the first quarter of 2027.
