A health and safety consultancy business in Norfolk has celebrated a hugely successful first year.

Immerse Safety, in Great Yarmouth, was set up by Carly Hughes from a laptop in a spare bedroom in March 2024 and has now grown to have more than 20 clients across the UK.

The businesses’ milestone is further highlighted by Carly’s recent shortlisting for the prestigious Woman of the Year Award 2025 at the Safety and Health Excellence Awards, which take place at the NEC in Birmingham in April.

Carly said: “Running a business has been both rewarding and relentless.

“At Immerse Safety I wear multiple ‘hats’, acting as not only a health and safety consultant and trainer, but also the social media manager, finance director, and everything in between.

“Despite the challenges, every second has been worth it, and year two promises even greater ambitions, with goals set for further expansion, new training programmes and additional consultancy offerings.

“As we step into our second year, we remain committed to delivering high-quality health and safety support, helping businesses create safer environments.

“We’re excited for what’s ahead and grateful for the clients, learners and partners who have been part of this journey.”

Carly has been working in health and safety for 10 years, having started when she was just 18.

She said having grown up in a single parent household on a council estate in Great Yarmouth, she wanted to inspire other people to realise their ambitions and start a business.

“I would like to show others from deprived backgrounds that you can achieve anything,” she said.

“I am the first in my immediate family to start and own a business and I love it.

“I’d like to build the business and expand to developing a great team of consultants and trainers, assisting and teaching more businesses.

“I’d also like to move into a central premises at some point too.”
