Plans to restore the boating lake at Colchester’s Castle Park are moving ahead – with the city council now preparing to go to tender for a contractor.
The council aims to complete the project by spring next year, with the next stage including a detailed condition survey to confirm the work required and final costs.
The project seeks to restore the boating lake and bring it back into use, subject to the survey findings, procurement, costs and necessary approvals.
Cllr Paul Dundas, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “We know people have been waiting for clarity about the future of the boating lake.
“There has been a lot to consider, but we have now reached the point where we can be clear about our ambition to restore it and bring it back into use.
“There is still important work to complete, including surveys, procurement and confirming the costs, but we are now ready to begin the process of appointing a contractor, with a clear ambition to get restoration work under way urgently and bring the boating lake back into use by spring 2027.
“From here, we’ll keep residents informed every step of the way.”
The lake dates from the 1800s and has long been an established feature of the Grade II-listed Castle Park.
Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “The boating lake has been part of Castle Park for generations and we know how much it means to residents and visitors.
“Having listened to the public we are unanimous in our commitment to getting this repaired and open for Spring 2027, so the residents of Colchester can once again enjoy the pleasant and tranquil relaxing environment.”
