A public consultation has launched on a draft masterplan to deliver around 500 homes on the edge of Bury St Edmunds.
Developers Crest Nicholson have drawn up their draft vision for the 63-hectare site north of Rougham Tower Avenue, which was highlighted in last year’s West Suffolk Local Plan.
The development is hoped to include around 500 homes, 20 hectares of employment land, land sufficient for a primary school and early years facility and provision for older persons accommodation, alongside community spaces.
The site lies next to the Rougham Control Tower Museum, once home to RAF Bury St Edmunds and the USAAF 94th Bombardment Group before its closure in 1948.
Both the Grade II-listed radar building and control tower would remain in place should the site be developed.
Cllr Frank Stennett, Cabinet Member for Planning at West Suffolk Council, said: “This site is already allocated for homes and employment growth in the current West Suffolk Local Plan which was shaped over several stages of consultation and engagement.
“This draft masterplan, which has been produced by developers, sets out their vision for how these new homes and employment could be delivered.
“This consultation presents a fantastic opportunity for residents, community groups, businesses and other interested parties to view the documents and to then give their feedback, make suggestions and ultimately help shape the future development of this site.”
A formal planning application from Crest Nicholson would follow the draft masterplan, should the document be finalised and adopted by West Suffolk Council.
The consultation will run for seven weeks until 5pm Monday, September 7.
Two drop-in events will be held during that time – although the date and location of these sessions are yet to be confirmed.
