Bedford Borough Council has appointed a specialist to deliver the regeneration of Mayes Yard in the town centre.

Cityheart has been selected as preferred bidder for the project, marking a significant milestone in the council’s ambition to revitalise this ‘significant’ area into a more connected, vibrant and sustainable town centre.

The aim is to transform Mayes Yard, which includes the former Debenhams building, into a mixed-use destination to support economic growth and create new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors to the town.

Benji Slater, Development Director at Cityheart, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as preferred bidder by Bedford Borough Council for the Mayes Yard project and to bring forward a high-quality, sustainable development that will make a lasting positive social and economic impact on the town centre.

“We recognise the importance of this location to Bedford and its residents and are committed to delivering a scheme that reflects its character, supports the local economy and creates a vibrant place for people to visit.”

Cityheart attended property and infrastructure event UKREiiF in Leeds in May to shed more light on the plans for Mayes Yard and provide insight into its wider pipeline of national schemes.

Cllr Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Town Centres and Planning at Bedford Borough Council, said: “This is an important step forward in delivering our long‑term vision for Bedford town centre.

“Mayes Yard is a prominent site offering a unique opportunity to create a more vibrant, connected and welcoming destination that supports economic growth and reflects the character of Bedford.

“Cityheart has demonstrated a strong understanding of our ambitions for the town centre, and we look forward to working with them in detail as we finalise the next stage in the process.”
