The developers of the Alconbury Weald community in Cambridgeshire have celebrated an important milestone as the next phase of work on the southern link road gets underway.
Alconbury Weald master developer, Urban&Civic, was joined by local stakeholders on Wednesday, February 12 to mark the progression of the next phase of work, which will form the southern gateway to the development, providing direct access to the A141 and Huntingdon.
As well as creating the southern gateway to the Alconbury Weald, the £10m investment in this 2km stretch of road will establish the southern end of The Boulevard.
The Boulevard will form the main spine route through the development for cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians, connecting the Ermine Street entrance of Alconbury Weald to the A141 west of Huntingdon.
This will support the building of new homes and the Prestley Country park, which is coming forward in the second phase of the development.
Most of the work to create the southern end of the Boulevard will take place onsite. Connection to the existing A141 infrastructure will happen once complete, which is estimated to be in late summer 2025.
Some early landscaping work and remediation has already taken place, along with archaeological investigations.
Nigel Hugill, Chief Executive of Urban&Civic, said: “This is an important milestone for Alconbury Weald, and marks the start of the second phase of this very special new community.
“This route will not only ensure a safe cycle, bus and road connection between Huntingdon and Alconbury Weald, but crucially enable us to start the next phase of homes on the former Grange Farm and the delivery of the wonderful new Prestley country park for residents of Alconbury Weald and The Stukeleys, and the wider area.”
Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “The development of the southern link road at Alconbury Weald is a significant milestone for our region.
“This new gateway will not only improve connectivity to Huntingdon and the A141, but also support the delivery of new homes, green spaces, and vital infrastructure.
“It’s a great example of how thoughtful planning and sustainable development can drive economic growth while protecting our environment.”
Cllr Tom Sanderson, Executive Councillor for Planning at Huntingdonshire District Council, added: “The construction of the southern link road marks a major milestone for Alconbury Weald as it kicks off the second phase of this new development.
“Huntingdonshire District Council has played a vital role in making this happen through its planning process, ensuring that the development is well-designed, sustainable, and meets the needs of the growing community.
“Beyond improving connectivity to Huntingdon and the A141, this new gateway will help deliver much-needed housing, green spaces, and essential infrastructure.
“It stands as a great example of how strategic planning and sustainable development can drive economic progress while protecting our environment.”
The work, which is being carried out by Breheny, will include the installation of new carriageway, footpaths/cycleways, services and streetlights.
