Suffolk County Council has received planning permission to build a primary and pre-school to serve the new housing development at Chilton Leys in Stowmarket.

The new 210-pupil primary school and 60-pupil pre-school will open in September 2022 to provide sufficient school places for local children and help support the new housing developments in the area.

Orwell Multi-Academy Trust has been approved to run the new school. CEO, Anna Hennell James, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to launch and develop the new school at Chilton Leys. We are excited to be working with the local community to create a learning space where children will be able to thrive and flourish from amazing educational experiences.”

The school, designed and project managed by Concertus Design and Property Consultants, will provide a focal point for the local neighbourhood. The school has been designed to fit in with the surrounding residential area with the external appearance designed to provide visual interest and an identity for each area of the school.

Emilie Farrimond, Project Manager at Concertus said: “The new primary and pre-school will provide a modern fit for purpose learning environment for local children, as well as helping to ease pressure on local schools due to the expansion of housing in the area. Our design is focused on representing the schools’ surroundings within the colour choices and fabric of the building and creating a central community hub which will be both unique and aesthetically pleasing.”

The new site can also accommodate future expansion, which will help guarantee continuity of provision and meet future population growth in the area.

James Wilson, Director and General Manager at R G Carter said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this much-needed school for the local community. We have extensive experience in providing high-quality educational facilities across the region and are looking forward to working in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Orwell Multi-Academy Trust on this exciting new project.”

The school will be built in the new Chilton Leys development in Stowmarket. R G Carter has been appointed as the main contractor on the project and is due to start on-site in the summer.
